Use a yellow-toned concealer to blend nicely and cover it with a loose powder. Apply powder on your forehead and other shiny part of your face. Use a sheer, berry or plum color lipstick on your lips. You will sure look great.
Fair Skin
Use a moisturizer and foundation with SPF 15. They will protect your skin against the sun. Apply translucent powder to set your foundation. Then stroke peach blush on your cheeks. You can use the same one to line your eyelids too. Apply extra coat of mascara and use a sheer red lipstick for a quick finish.
Rosy Skin
Cover your blemishes and your uneven skin tones with a concealer same shade with your skin. Then apply a berry shade liquid gel blush with your fingers on your cheeks. Put on brown mascara onto your upper and lower lashes. Before applying your lipstick use a tinted balm but if you have rosy lips, apply clear gloss.
Dark Skin
Use an oil free makeup. Apply foundation using your fingers or sponge. Use a powder that will match your skin to set the foundation. Then a stroke of brownish red blush will look great on you. Finish it with a coffee or copper colored lip gloss on lips.

Wrinkle creams: Your guide to younger looking skin


Do over-the-counter wrinkle creams really reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? The answer depends on many factors.

Many wrinkle creams and lotions sold in department stores, in drugstores and on the Internet promise to reduce wrinkles and prevent or reverse damage caused by the sun.
Do they work? Research suggests that some wrinkle creams contain ingredients that may improve the appearance of wrinkles. But many of these ingredients haven't undergone scientific research to prove this benefit.
If you're looking for a face-lift in a bottle, you probably won't find it in over-the-counter (nonprescription) wrinkle creams. But they may slightly improve the appearance of your skin, depending on how long you use the product and the amount and type of the active ingredient in the wrinkle cream.

Common ingredients in anti-wrinkle creams

The effectiveness of anti-wrinkle creams depends in part on the active ingredient or ingredients. Here are some common ingredients that may result in slight to modest improvement in the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Retinol. Retinol is a vitamin A compound, the first antioxidant to be widely used in nonprescription wrinkle creams. Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals — unstable oxygen molecules that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles. Retinol is less potent than the vitamin A derivative tretinoin, a topical treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating wrinkles. Tretinoin is available only by prescription. Avoid vitamin A derivatives if you are pregnant or may become pregnant, because they may increase the risk of birth defects.
  • Hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids and poly hydroxy acids are synthetic versions of acids derived from sugar-containing fruits. These acids are exfoliants — substances that remove the upper layer of old, dead skin and stimulate the growth of smooth, evenly pigmented new skin. Because hydroxy acids increase your susceptibility to sun damage, always wear sunscreen during use and for at least one week afterward.
  • Coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient that helps regulate energy production in cells. Some studies have shown reduction in fine wrinkles around the eyes with no side effects. Other studies show that application before sun exposure protects against sun damage.
  • Copper peptides. Copper is a trace element found in every cell. In products applied to the skin, it's combined with small protein fragments called peptides. Copper peptides enhance wound healing. They also stimulate production of collagen and may enhance the action of antioxidants.
  • Kinetin. As a plant growth factor, kinetin may improve the appearance of wrinkles and uneven pigmentation with minimal irritation. It's unclear how it works, but it may help reduce wrinkles by helping skin retain moisture and by stimulating the production of collagen. It may also be a potent antioxidant.
  • Tea extracts. Green, black and oolong tea contain compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea extracts are the ones most commonly found in wrinkle creams.

Why does skin wrinkle with age?


What is the best way to slow or prevent this process?



Suzan Obagi, assistant professor in dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh and director of the Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center, explains.
Normal healthy skin has a nice epidermis with a smooth cornified, or outer, layer that acts as a good barrier to water and environmental injury. Skin color and tone is even and unblemished. Components such as collagen (which provides skin firmness), elastin (which supplies skin elasticity and rebound) and glycosaminoglycans or GAGs (which keep the skin hydrated) are all abundant. It is interesting to note that under a microscope a biopsy of a wrinkle exhibits no telltale signs that reveal it to be a wrinkle. So what causes the skin to look wrinkled? It is probably a multi-factorial process of intrinsic aging and extrinsic aging.
Intrinsic aging is the natural aging process that takes place over the years regardless of outside influences. After the age of 20, a person produces about 1 percent less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile with age. There is also diminished functioning of the sweat and oil glands, less elastin production, and less GAG formation. Wrinkle formation as a result of intrinsic aging is inevitable, but it will always be slight.
Extrinsic aging occurs in addition to intrinsic aging as a result of sun and environmental damage (tobacco use and exposure to pollution, for example). Extrinsic aging shows up as thickening of the cornified layer, precancerous changes such as lesions called actinic keratosis, skin cancer (including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, lentigo maligna melanoma), freckle and sun spot formation, and exaggerated loss of collagen, elastin, and GAGs. Alone or in concert, these processes give the skin the appearance of roughness, uneven tone, brown patches, thin skin and deep wrinkles.
Prevention is key to minimizing wrinkles. The most important thing is to take care of your skin before all these changes start to take place. Sun protection against both UVA and UVB rays is critical 365 days a year using an SPF of at least 35: I prefer zinc- or titanium-based products. After the age of 25 I recommend using Retin-A (a vitamin A derivative that uses the generic name tretinoin) as an antiaging cream. It is a prescription agent that has been used for more than 30 years with a safe track record and excellent results. In the first two or three months patients may experience redness, peeling and flaking, but should then noticed a marked improvement. Over time tretinoin improves fine lines, the appearance of pores, precancerous changes, and brown spots. If tretinoin treatment is not enough, then medium depth chemical peels and some non-invasive lasers can help build collagen and thus improve the skin's appearance.

Cucumber

Although fresh pumpkins are usually only available in the fall, you can always buy canned. Get an organic brand to make sure you’re not going to absorb pesticide residue through your skin.
Pumpkin is easy to use. Just mix a beaten egg white, meringue consistency is best, with a cup of mashed pumpkin, smooth it on your face and neck and rinse off after five or 10 minutes.

6 Gentler Overnight Homemade Acne Scar Treatments


Acne scars and acne pores are the marks of acne even after the acne is cured. Severe acne causes cysts (known as nodules) beneath the skin, which may lead to scarring. Your dermatologist can perform several different acne-scar removal techniques such as microdermabrasion and laser light therapy. However, these procedures can be painful, not to mention expensive. 1. A baking soda facial mask is gentle and non irritating. Mix some baking soda powder into a paste, apply to your face and let dry, then rinse with pure water. If you feel your skin is too sensitive for a whole facial mask, try dabbing the paste onto individual pimples. Let them dry, then rinse.

Preparation

  • In a glass jar, pour sesame oil and gradually add the other oils
  • Stir slowly until the oils mix well
  • You can store it in a cool and dry place and use it when needed

This body oil mixture is to be used two times a day. Use a few drops and rub in the skin.

Deep conditioner
Ingredients
  • 3-4 drops of essential oils of your choice
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • 1 egg

Preparation

  • Beat the egg
  • Mix in the rest of the ingredients
  • Apply on the hair and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Rinse off using a gentle shampoo

This hair conditioner helps moisturize (olive oil) and soften your hair (egg). You can keep it refrigerated in a plastic container with a lid. Shake it well before using it.

Allergic or intolerant?


Does your skin balloon if you eat shellfish? Or perhaps you feel bloated and uncomfortable after eating too much bread.

Many people are sensitive to foods like nuts, shellfish and cereals containing gluten. Symptoms of food reactions can include stomach upsets, skin rashes and breathing problems. Some severe reactions can even be life threatening.
Food reactions are generally classified as either allergies or intolerances. While there is evidence that both are on the increase, it’s important to understand the difference between the various types of food reactions and to avoid self-diagnosing.
Symptoms of food reactions can also be caused by other conditions, so medical diagnosis is a must. This may involve being referred to an allergy specialist or gastroenterologist for appropriate testing, depending on the symptoms.
Understanding the difference between food intolerance and food allergy is a very important step in diagnosis as it will determine the best approach for dealing with the problem. Essentially, food allergy is defined as an immune response while food intolerance is a chemical reaction.

Food allergy
Allergies are the body’s immune overreaction to a specific component of a food – usually protein. In other words, your immune system mistakenly identifies a certain food or substance as harmful.
When the immune system overreacts, immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies are produced against substances or allergens in the environment that are otherwise harmless – pollens, house dust, animal hair and specific food proteins. IgE antibodies to specific allergens can be detected by skin prick tests or radioallergosorbent tests (RAST).
According to the Allergy Unit at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the prevalence of food allergies varies with age but is most common in infants and children, usually beginning in the first 12 months.
The most common symptom is atopic eczema, which is an intensely itchy chronic skin rash. Other reactions include hives, stomach cramps and nausea. Some reactions may progress to life-threatening anaphylaxis, tissue swelling, breathing difficulty or collapse, which require emergency treatment.
The most common food allergies are to eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts and seafood. Wheat and soy can also cause allergies but they are less severe and don’t last as long. Most children tend to grow out of egg and milk allergies, but allergies to nuts and seafood often continue into adulthood. According to The Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), food allergy occurs in one in 20 children and about one in 100 adults.

Food intolerance
Food intolerances don’t involve the immune system at all. They are triggered by various natural food chemicals or additives that irritate the nervous system of sensitive people. Symptoms vary from person to person; however, the most common include recurrent hives, swelling, stomach and bowel irritation, and headaches. Some people feel moody or experience flu-like symptoms.
Food intolerance reactions are usually related to the amount of food consumed. They may not occur until a certain amount of food is eaten, which is usually referred to as the ‘chemical threshold’.
Different foods can contain the same chemical or substance that causes the intolerance, but in small amounts. This chemical can accumulate in the body over time and when the threshold is finally exceeded, cause a reaction. Usually the last food eaten is blamed for the reaction but it’s usually the combination of a number of foods that causes the reaction.

Natural versus chemical 

Contrary to the belief that only added or ‘artificial’ food chemicals cause reactions or intolerances, there are many natural food components or chemicals that cause food intolerances. The natural chemicals most likely to cause reactions in sensitive individuals are salicylates, amines and glutamate – for example, monosodium glutamate (MSG).
Food additives are added to enhance the flavour, appearance and shelf life of foods. Your body cannot tell the difference between natural food chemicals and artificial food chemicals in processed foods. MSG is popular flavour enhancer used in savoury snack foods, soups, sauces and Asian foods. Foods rich in glutamates or the natural chemical include cheese, tomatoes and mushrooms. Those who are sensitive to the chemical glutamate may react equally to high intakes of MSG and natural glutamate.

Coeliac disease
Coeliac disease is caused by an immune reaction to gluten, a protein found in certain grains including wheat, barley and rye. The condition involves inflammation and damage to the lining of the small intestine, which can impair nutrient absorption.
Symptoms can include mouth ulcers, fatigue, bloating, cramps, diarrhoea and skin rash. Some people have no symptoms at all while others develop health conditions due to nutrient deficiencies such as anaemia and osteoporosis.
Blood tests are usually performed to detect antibodies, followed by an endoscopy and small bowel biopsy. However, for these tests to be reliable you have to include gluten in your diet regularly. Tests can become negative within a few weeks with gluten avoidance.
Some people experience symptoms after consuming gluten without having coeliac disease – such people are described as ‘non-coeliac gluten intolerant’ and they feel better when they avoid gluten. The current treatment for coeliac disease is life-long avoidance of gluten.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a common condition characterised by gastrointestinal symptoms. The most common symptoms include lower abdominal pain, bloating, wind, diarrhoea and constipation.
A large number of dietary triggers have been associated with IBS, including fatty foods, alcohol and caffeine. Recent research conducted by Monash University’s Department of Medicine focused on the dietary sugars fermentable oligosaccharides, di-saccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPS).
In a recent newspaper article, senior lecturer at Monash University Dr Sue Shepherd says that some sensitive people experience ferment in the gut, which causes bloating and wind. She also cites a 2005 study at Monash University that found IBS symptoms were improved by avoiding or reducing foods high in these saccharides. Examples include wheat, rye, cow’s milk, apples, pears, stone fruit, watermelon, cabbage, broccoli, onions, mushrooms and legumes.

Elimination diets
Unlike allergies there are no skin or blood tests that can help diagnose food intolerances. It is also not possible to tell from a person’s symptoms to which chemicals they are sensitive. Food intolerances are usually diagnosed via an elimination diet where a low chemical diet is followed for a period of time to allow symptoms to reduce before challenge foods are reintroduced one at a time.
The Allergy Unit at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital has produced elimination diet guidelines, which are available to the public.
So it’s important to investigate whether feeling queasy or bloated after a meal is the result of a mild intolerance or full-blown allergy. You may be surprised to learn that an allergy you’ve suffered from since childhood is merely an intolerance that may allow you to enjoy small portions from time to time – it’s simply a matter of separating allergy from intolerance.
